A physical University of Georgia team took the battle to USC early, but the Gamecocks staged a methodical comeback and won the day 27-15 Saturday in Athens.
The Bulldogs built a 12-0 lead before freshman Charlie Feehan found the try zone at the 15-minute mark. After the failed conversion, Georgia put up another try. The Gamecocks responded with trys from prop Tom Brady and wing Jack Gallagher to knot the score 15-15 at the break.
USC controlled possession and field position for much of the second half. But a feisty Bulldog defense kept them out of the try zone until flyhalf Charlie Dwyer found the try zone midway through the second half. Center Grant Ruhlen scored at the 73-minute mark to seal the victory.
Kicking, normally a USC strongpoint, was off Saturday. The Gamecocks converted just 1 of 5 trys.
“Georgia is a good team. And they play very hard at home,” said Coach John Roberts. “They always give us fits here. We did a great job of moving the ball and pressuring on the perimeter. Our defense was poor early. We allowed two trys, but recovered nicely to score the next five.”
In the nightcap game, the Gamecock B-side (the Savages) rushed passed the Georgia reserves 36-7.
