The Gamecocks look to four-peat as Southeastern Collegiate Rugby 7s Champion Saturday in Greer, SC.
The tournament begins at 9 a.m. and will be held at Country Club Park, 2501 Country Club Road Greer, SC. Clemson, the official host, will stream all games on their Youtube Channel.
The Gamecocks used grit – and a bit of luck – to capture the SCRC 7s championship the past three years. In 2022-24, USC defeated Clemson, Tennessee and Kentucky respectively in the finals. All games were won on the final play of the game.
Riddled with injuries and with many of last year’s 7s starters studying abroad this spring, the Gamecocks have had a mediocre season thus far in compiling a 11-11 record. USC must perform well in the tournament to advance to the National Collegiate Rugby 7s National Championship Tournament April 26-27 in Gaithersburg, Virginia.
That said, the Gamecocks enter the tournament near full strength. Captain Peter Blackburn returns to the line up along with freshmen Charlie Dwyer and Charlie Feehan, who should provide some offensive punch.
“We have two good weeks of practice of live-contact scrimmages,” says coach John Roberts. “We’ve worked hard to improve our toughness and communication. Hopefully, this will pay dividends Saturday.”
