In our first run-out of the year, the Gamecocks were nipped by Iowa Central Community College (ICCC), a varsity team, 24-21 in the semi-finals of the Sunshine 7s Tournament in Gainesville, Florida Saturday.
ICCC went on to defeat Clemson in the finals while USC bested the University of Florida to take third place in the eight-team field.
Overall, the USC A-side finished 4-1 with wins over Clemson B (27-12)) Auburn (33-0) and two wins over Florida (33-12 and 22-17). The USC B-side finished a respectable 1-3 defeating Florida B (33-0) and dropping games to Clemson A (24-7) ICCC (29-7) and Clemson B (15-10).
Freshman Charlie Dwyer led the Gamecock A-side with six trys. Freshman Charlie Feehan scored four trys. Junior Matt Morrow led the B-side with four trys.
“This was a solid first outing,” said Head Coach John Roberts. “With several of last year’s 7s starter studying overseas this spring, our newer players are stepping up and looking to develop chemistry as we dive deeper into our season.”
